Friends and Good Days

Apr. 29th, 2008 | 02:14 pm
location: back at work and loving it
mood: happy happy
music: keys clacking

Today has already been for for several reasons.  First, I got my hair cut last week and I just totally LOVE it!  It is SHORT!  I mean SHORT! And spikey and kinda sassy. And Miz Kim (Harrison) and I had tea, and she loved it too.  I haven't posted about the hair cut, because I wanted to surprise her. <grins> And she loved it as much as I.

Tea for us is a visit to Starbucks, curling up in a corner, and talking about writing, our carrers, travel for our books, signings, and also about the life of a writer -- our SOs, families, pets, etc. It is something relaxing that I do about 2 times a month. And it keeps me sane. It gives me an hour away from the desk. Away from the phone. I come away refreshed and ready to write, ready to see things (life, my WIP, problems, whatever) differently.

Now I'm ready to write. Whoowhoo! And at 4 PM I am meeting with a foundation grant person to talk about my new project. As if I don't have enough to do, I am thinking about this Traveling Writer in Residence Program for the fiscally challenged schools in my state.

Sigh...  Good day!

rants and books and shelf space

Mar. 4th, 2008 | 11:12 am
location: bouncing up and down in my chair
mood: frustrated frustrated
music: sound of bouncing

The writers and fans at www.magicalwords.net (one of my other blogs, a group blog with 3 other writers, David B Coe, CE Murphy, and Misty Massey) were chatting about covers and that drove me to reply with a frustration I have about book placement on shelves and....Ok. Now it's a rant. Minor rant, but a rant.

As many of you know, I write mysteries under another name (Gwen Hunter).
I had a question from one of her fans that I'd like to share with ya'll, as it has to do with the industry and is the reason for the rant....

"Why is Sleep Softly in the *romance* section???? I couldn't find it!"

Silent rant...Grrrrrrr!!!! New book, on shelves, and a problem.  Again.

Back to professional self: Well, no one can find the book, sadly enough. This is one of the problems of being an imprint of a larger house. The imprint always has the *flavor* of the umbrella company. Some of you may be saying...what the heck is she talking about????

I (Gwen) have had 7 books from Mira, with an eighth in the works, one of my current WIP. Mira is a Harlequin imprint, meaning that Harlequin owns the company. The books arrive at bookstores in a Harlequin box. Therefore (according to part-time, underpaid workers making minimum wage) the novels inside must be romances, right?  NOT!

I do NOT write romance.
As Gwen, I write dead bodies (mysteries and thrillers.)
As Faith, I write kick-ass gals taking on BBUs!
Imprints need thier own boxes for shipping with their own logo on the boxes. Obvious, right?
I'm not mad at Mira. Every big house has it's problems and writers are always griping about them. If not shipping boxes then somethign else. But it is frustrating.
Just an insight into the life of a writer.
Grrrrr.

books and fashion and chocolate

Aug. 7th, 2007 | 07:40 pm
location: on the couch
mood: shell-shocked shell-shocked
music: Silence. Blessed silence.

What *is* the allure of smearing chocolate on Aunt Faith's T-shirt? it's not a new fashion. It's not pretty. But my darling four year old niece decided that the T was in need of embleshment. Several giggling, struggling mouth prints later, the four year old is happy. I'm messy.  The six year old assures me that we can leave her sister at home alone, go shopping, and buy me another one. And a present for the stay-at-home sis too, course. So I could know that the idea of shopping was all out of the goodness of her heart.

Sigh....

We did not go shopping. And -- at least chocolate comes out of T-shirts.  And white pants. And at least I got to read some in Pretender by C J Cherryh, 2007.

And at least they played well together today. I got 2/3rds of a proposal done for a new book. Now I am at home, comtemplating ways to relax.

It is 99 degrees outside. Hot bath is out. Wonder what, in the fridge, is cold and liquid. And at the moment I wish I still smoked cigars.

Faith -- who needs to relax

books

Jun. 27th, 2007 | 10:38 am
location: on the deck
mood: relaxed relaxed
music: bird calls, and hawks hunting

I'm reading the Lee Child series about Jack Reacher.
Child captures the essense of the lone wolf character in one, and carries it through each book. He also creates a new setting with each book so you don't get bored with same-ol-same-ol. There is a new creativity in each book. Only fear, is that the character will stop evolving. But so far....
I love it!

location: surrounded by flowers

Writers are supposed to be creative in lots of ways -- which is really cool until the brain hits overload and starts shorting out. Today I am making a new kind of necklace using various colors of embroidery thread and Amazonite, an aqua stone, while I'm thinking about new weapons for my characters to use to kill Darkness. I need a new sword for Thorn St.Croix, my character in the Rogue Mage series. Something snazzy. I keep envisioning a steel sword (natch) with gold engraving and a gold plated hilt tipped with a yellow diamond. And a wicked-sharp edge. Snicker-snick.

And on top of all that, I am still surrounded by flowers.  Misty gave me flowers the other week and they are still in full bloom, as are two orchids.  And two other plants are about to bloom. I'm reading three books with the flower-surround and the jewelry making and the sword designing...

Brain overload.  Too may disparate images and thoughts. Blood and body parts and blooms and gems...and great new boots!

8 random things

May. 11th, 2007 | 10:42 am
location: staring at orchids and thinking good thoughts
mood: peaceful peaceful

Misty posted recently about writing about 8 personal random things. It's been preying on my mind.
...8 personal, random things?

1.  My new book is out -- new age fantasy, or dark urban fantasy, take your pick. Seraphs, book two in the Rogue Mage series. It makes my stomach hurt to think about it.

2. I just lost my editor. She went to another house and I'm orphaned.  Again. Sigh...

3. I own orchids. Two of mine are in bloom and are stunning. And thanks to the gift of a friend, I have flowers all over the house this week. It is wonderful!

4. I want a pair of shiny gold boots and a new necklace to go with them. I'll make the necklace, natch, but not the boots.

5. The love of my life, Ren, remakes himself every 5 to 7 years and I follow along to see who he will be next. Right now he's a publisher. Not publishign me, but doing great work for other writers.

6. I read urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and paranormal fiction, along with hard sifi -- battle scenes all welcome.  Waiting for the new Vorkosigan novel by Lois McMaster Bujold. <rubs hands in anticipation>  And the new Honor Harrington book.  Yummy.

7.  I love doggerel -- campy-ier the better. I just posted one on MySpace and on my Yahoo! site that invaded my head and demanded to be put down for posterity.

8.  I love being a writer more than almost anything. It is one of the three the greatest gifts God ever gave me, to fill my head with stories and characters, to let me write them down on paper and have them make sense...and actually get sold to an NY house!

Kim Harrison

May. 4th, 2007 | 02:39 pm
location: at my writing desk
mood: excited excited

I just crawled out of bed and caught up on all the emails at MySpace and the Yahoo! groups the Enclave and the Hollows.  I thought I'd treat myself to a blow-by-blow memory of the evening. So you get to be there with Miz Kim Harrison and me and Wayne, the DJ who hosted the signing event at the BookRack inRock Hill, SC, and Ren and Kim's Guy in leather.

First, me. Like Miz Kim, I'm short, but unlike Miz Kim I'm...um...rounder is a nice kind word. <grins> We both go for heels and boots -- Yes, hard to walk in sometimes, but I have a broken toe (metatarsal, up in the foot) and I have to wear boots that don't give. And hey, no boot worth it's name is a flat.

Miz Kim wore open toed shoes with fishnet stockings.  Showed off her pretty toes, and was very sexy, even when they (stockings, not toes) disappeared up under her black pants.  Ren says to me -- So. You got any fishnets?  And he picks up my black skirt as if to peek.  Men...<grins>

And Miz Kim was in black lace short sleeved shirt with black vest and a pretty necklace of gold pearls and teardrop-shaped stone, kinda green with blue glimmers.  The stone is called labrodorite.  I'm in a black top with a gold scarf and my amulet necklace.  With my newest belly dance scarf over my hips.  Miz Kim is svelt and dark while I'm splashy and slinky.  We contrast well.  Oh -- hair.  Miz Kim still long and red, and I've added honey contrasts to my blonde.  Ren said we looked cute.  *Cute???*  We looked fantastic!

Our men looked good too.  <grins>  DJ Wayne was casual in jeans and tee, and is very engaging.  And hey -- the man knows his women.  He brought each of us chocolate.  LOTS of chocolate!!!

Kim and I both had lots of fans and friends stop by, to buy, sign, visit, ask questions, look us over, etc.  Fans were showing up with bags of books for Miz Kim to sign, and she took time for them all.  Hey to all you guys bought BloodRing and Seraphs!!!!  Hope you like fighting and battle dire!

Wayne set his equipment up behind the book counter and Kim and I walked back and forth for our parts of the interview.  Yes -- I am from the South!  I know the accent gave it away. <grins>  I've known Kim Harrison forever, and she sounds a bit more Southern than when she first showed around here. Honest, Kim, you do. <grins>  But she'll never have the slow drawl.

After the signing we 5 went out to eat.  Even with Miz Kim there we had to wait.  Can you image making a star wait????

I got separated from the group for a moment, and had two guys and a couple (yes a man and woman) try to pick me up.  Ahem...  Okay, we all looked really good.  And I *was* showing a tiny bit of cleavage.  Just a tiny bit.  Really.

So we finally got to eat, and it was wonderful.  Wayne pumped Miz Kim for info about the books, but at the same time he begged her not to tell. It was fun!  And Miz Kim gave her cat-got-the-cream grin in answer.  I don't think he got much from her, but then, she's cagey that way!  We talked so much we nearly closed the restaurant down.

It was a wonderful debut signing for Seraphs, lovely interview, great dinner and afternoon and evening.  I couldn't sleep when I got home and was too wired to write all this then!

boots and books

May. 3rd, 2007 | 10:38 am
location: liking my new boots
mood: chipper chipper

Being a writer, my head is always filled with new worlds and characters who are either saving the world or trying to destroy it. Sometimes literally. <grins> So when I make a new piece of jewelry or get a new pair of boots, I have to take a break and enjoy it. I finally uploaded a boot PIC.  take a gander...

And Seraphs is out! The second book in the Rogue Mage series...
